The Majestic Theatre in Las Vegas came to us asking for an 8’ x 2’ sign that was interesting to look at and said “Limelight“. While speaking with them we decided that the way to give them the best look while making the most of their money was to build them a reusable lightbox with a removable Limelight front. While the box itself could have easily been built with traditional methods since the front would be cut on the CNC it made sense to cut everything out on the CNC.

Lightbox designed in Fusion 360 and ready for CAM.

I hadn’t really done a lot of carpentry recently because I have been busy designing things so it was nice to get back in the shop and make some sawdust. Most components where cut out on the CNC, but the plywood was reinforced with some 2x2’s in the back of the sign to give it more structure and to allow the Majestic as much mounting flexibility as possible. There is a terminal strip in back of the lightbox that allows the red, blue, and green channels to be either always on or controlled by a remote dimmer. This will allow them to have animated lighting in theatre as well as offsite when lighting control isn’t available. This should give them everything they wanted for this production and be easy to convert to the next one.

Assembled lightbox. Sadly the camera over exposes the highlights. The color of the LEDs is very green and looks great.
